Music Behind the Story

There was a season in my life when I taught non-credit art classes at our local university. Those classes reminded me why I fell in love with painting in the first place.

People from all walks of life would come through the doors. Some had never picked up a paintbrush before. Others were convinced they weren’t creative enough to paint anything worth keeping.

My goal was never to create perfect artists.

My goal was to help people discover the joy of creating.

Many of the classes included a wellness speaker while everyone painted. As I watched each canvas begin to come alive, I realized something important. Sometimes people needed encouragement as much as they needed instruction.

Every drummer has a rhythm.

Every artist has a brushstroke.

Every songwriter has a melody.

Every life has a purpose.

We don't honor the Creator by becoming copies of someone else.

We honor Him by becoming the person He created us to be.

On one occasion, I decided to write a message on the back of every canvas before the class began. The students didn’t know it was there.

Simple words.

You are enough.

You are loved.

You are wanted.

You’ve got this.

My hope was that one day—perhaps months or even years later—they would turn that painting over and discover the message waiting for them exactly when they needed it most.

I’ve often wondered how many people eventually found those words.

Maybe someone was having a difficult day.

Maybe they needed hope.

Maybe they needed a reminder that they mattered.

We rarely know how far a kind word will travel or how deeply it may touch another heart.

That experience changed the way I looked at my own artwork.

A painting isn’t just paint on canvas.

It can become encouragement.

It can become healing.

It can become hope.

Sometimes the greatest masterpiece isn’t the one hanging on the wall…

It’s the one quietly changing a life.

Thank you for spending a little time in my world.

Keep telling your story.
